Post 904's History

A History of service and leadership

John B. Lyman American Legion Post 904 Banner program has helped us learn a lot about our veteran history

The Alexandria Bay arch was originally built by Post 904, other not for profits and churches to welcome the 1924 American Legion Department of New York American Legion Convention.  Department Commander Spafford heaped high praise on Convention accommodation Chairman Gould Lyman, the Post officers and the community for the convention.  Commander Spafford’s convention set, changed or set the course for The American Legion in the state and Nation.

Post 904 color guard members include John Langlois

John Langlois at his first job at The Ship Restaurant. Langlois, who was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, spent a year in a full body cast after returning home from World War II; he was still in physical therapy when this picture was taken. It was featured in an article by a Syracuse newspaper praising the Town of Alexandria for giving veterans preferences for jobs after WWII. Carl Lober was the owner of The Ship Restaurant (burned in the 60’s), and like all the business owners in the village at the time, hired returning veterans FIRST.

Powerpoint Presentation from 2024's Installation Dinner

Kelly Curry created this mural for Post 904 in time to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 1924 Department of New York American Legion Convention that was held here in Alexandria Bay. This was the convention where the seeds of The American Legion were spread throughout the State and Nation.

Kelly has also joined our Auxillary!
