John Burns Lyman was born at Alexandria Bay, New York, August 17, 1890. His parents were Eva Shoemaker and Larence Frances Lyman. His maternal grandfather was a veteran of the Civil War.
John Lyman was educated in the grade schools of Alexandria Bay. He attended Colgate University. He was graduated from Michigan University in June, 1912.
He was a member of Detroit Naval Militia and was sworn into service April 6, 1917. He served on the battleship “Iowa”. He was also stationed at Philadelphia Navy Yard. He received his appointment to army officer’s training school from Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1917. He was commissioned First Lieutenant at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and was assigned to Camp Jackson, S.C. He went overseas with the Third United States Regular Army Division as a member of Third Train Hdqt. And M.P.
He participated in six major engagements of the Third Division; Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisen-Marne, St Michiel Meuse-Argonne, Division Sector.
He was killed in action in the Argonne on October 3rd, 1918, at the crossroads of Montafucan and Cirisy. His body is interred at the American Cemetery, Romange, France.
